1,000 Octopuses (Octopi, Octopodes)

My newest project is to make 1,000 octopuses. I have always been fascinated with folding paper cranes for luck (senbazuru)... Legend has it that if you fold 1,000 cranes it will grant a wish or give you a lifetime of good fortune... Sadly origami has never been my forte.... but amigurumi* TOTALLY is.... I love to make finger puppets and toys and I often have small bits of yarn and a crochet hook on hand to whip up little things on the go. These little octopuses have been something I have been making for years... they are easy and quick to make (I can whip one up in about 10-15 minutes) and they are like little 8 legged mandalas. I am not sure where my 1,000 octopus journey will take me... but I know that the first 100 are going to become a part of a yarn sculpture that I am working on...Here is a sneak peak. So far I am about 45 octopuses in to my 1,000... I am not sure that I will have them done by the end of 2025... but I plan on doing them as a series of smaller projects... the firs...

Row 6-11: sc in each stitch (12) Sl st into next two and fasten off  Ears: Make ears by chaining 8 then sc into second stitch and continue to the end of the row. Fasten off and attach to the body. Weave in all ends.

Little Santa Hat

Deck the gods with boughs of holly… Ra ra ra ra ra… ra ra ra ra… Ok this isn’t Ra, but Anubis… but they both have animal heads and look great in Santa hats.  You can make these Santa hats for your amigurumi, finger puppets, or statues of Anubis.  Or simply add a string at the top for a quick Christmas tree ornament.  I used an E hook with a DK yarn for the hat and a worsted weight for the white trim. sc- single crochet inc- single crochet two into one sl st- slip stitch Round 1- Make 6 sc into a magic ring Round 2- sc around (6) Round 3- (sc, inc)  around (9) Round 4- sc around (9) Round 5- (sc, sc, inc) around (12) Round 6- sc around switching to white in the last stitch (12) Round 7- sc around in the white, sl st into first stitch and fasten off. Weave in ends and make a french knot in white at the top with a nice thick yarn for the ball.

Mummies and More!

Five little mummies sleeping in a tomb One mummy said "We need a bigger room!" So he jumped right up and marched out the door. He went on his quest and then there were four. Four little mummies sitting in a crypt. One mummy said "I think I'll take a little trip." So he packed his bags and soon he was free. He left them all behind and then there were three. Three little mummies resting in their grave One mummy said "It's time to be a little brave!" So he marched out the door because he knew just what to do. He walked across the desert and the there were two. Two little mummies in a pyramid in the sand. One mummy cried "I want to visit distant lands!" So he called his travel agent and said "It's time I had some fun." He booked his flight to Memphis and then there was one. One little mummy was sent to the museum. He was sad and alone until his brothers came to see him. So by day th...

New Pattern: Little Hoppy Creature (mini)

Here is a new pattern just in time for Easter.  It is very simple and requires only a small amount of yarn, so even if the Easter Bunny is running behind this year it should be easily completed in time for the holiday.  This is a perfect project for beginners.  Yarn weight is not really important.  Just match the yarn weight with the hook size and you should be set.  You want fairly tight stitches when doing  any amigurumi project so keep that in mind when choosing your materials.  I used a local acrylic yarn that they make here in Egypt.  The weight of the yarn is not specified but it is probably closest to sports weight yarn.  I made these using a size E hook. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think.  I also love seeing other people's projects so please post photos of your little creatures on Ravelry .  If you like this patterns please check out the side bar for other little creature patterns.  I hope you enjoy...

Charity Bears

I just started working on a new project.  I'm knitting (and crocheting) teddy bears for kids in the cancer ward here in Egypt.  One of my neighbors attends the local catholic church and she shared a newsletter with me calling on knitters to make some bears.  I met with the woman who is organizing the project and she gave me a knitting pattern.  The pattern comes from a organization based in the UK called Teddies for Tragedies .  On their web site I found a lot of information about making the bears as well as other charity projects that you can get involved in.  While I'm not officially making bears for the Teddies for Tragedies charity it seems like a good organization.  In addition to the knitting pattern they also have a crochet pattern .  So far I've made one of each.  Which one do you like best? Cheers, Jenn
