1,000 Octopuses (Octopi, Octopodes)

My newest project is to make 1,000 octopuses. I have always been fascinated with folding paper cranes for luck (senbazuru)... Legend has it that if you fold 1,000 cranes it will grant a wish or give you a lifetime of good fortune... Sadly origami has never been my forte.... but amigurumi* TOTALLY is.... I love to make finger puppets and toys and I often have small bits of yarn and a crochet hook on hand to whip up little things on the go. These little octopuses have been something I have been making for years... they are easy and quick to make (I can whip one up in about 10-15 minutes) and they are like little 8 legged mandalas. I am not sure where my 1,000 octopus journey will take me... but I know that the first 100 are going to become a part of a yarn sculpture that I am working on...Here is a sneak peak. So far I am about 45 octopuses in to my 1,000... I am not sure that I will have them done by the end of 2025... but I plan on doing them as a series of smaller projects... the firs...

Mummies and More!

Five little mummies sleeping in a tomb One mummy said "We need a bigger room!" So he jumped right up and marched out the door. He went on his quest and then there were four. Four little mummies sitting in a crypt. One mummy said "I think I'll take a little trip." So he packed his bags and soon he was free. He left them all behind and then there were three. Three little mummies resting in their grave One mummy said "It's time to be a little brave!" So he marched out the door because he knew just what to do. He walked across the desert and the there were two. Two little mummies in a pyramid in the sand. One mummy cried "I want to visit distant lands!" So he called his travel agent and said "It's time I had some fun." He booked his flight to Memphis and then there was one. One little mummy was sent to the museum. Mike Row... the adventure continues...

Mike Row has now visited a toilet seat museum and a little cache called Quacker State. The toilet seat museum is located in San Antonio in the garage of a Octogenarian (possibly Nonagenarian) ex-plumber who displays over 1000 decorated toilet seats. Quacker State is a mystery cache full of ducks... and the mystery is it's exact location... so who knows... Both of these caches are an easy day trip from where I live... so now I have a few interesting places for weekend trips. I can't wait to see where geocaching will take Mike next.

Mike Row and the Little Red Creature

I just made a new travel bug to send out. His name is Little Red Creature and his mission is to travel from geocache to geocache making people smile. I will probably drop him off soon and send him on his way.... so here are a few photos before he goes. I also have my first photo of Mike Row on his adventure. As far as I know he is still in Texas right now but soon he will be traveling to the Burning Man Festival. In the above photo Mike appears to be bait in a trap designed to trap geocachers. Cheers, Jenn

The Adventures of Mike Row

Today we set up a geocache and released two travel bugs. What is a travel bug you ask? You may even be asking what is a geocache ... Well here is the story. A few months ago I attended a Texas Parks and Wildlife class about geocaching . I was at my second BOW retreat (becoming and outdoors woman) and it was one of the offered class. I had heard of geocaching , but when I walked into the classroom I had no idea what to expect... I had no idea that this would become a new obsession for me and my family. What I found out was that geocaching is outdoor treasure hunting using a GPS device. It is done on a very large scale. People from all over the world hide containers, small and large, all over the place and then log the coordinates online for other people to find. You probably walk right by geocaches every day and have no idea that they are there. A travel bug is an item, any item, that you attach a special tag to that allows you to track it's progress (using a trac...

Peter Rabbit Finger Puppet

I love making little toys especially finger puppets. It is so easy to come up with cute variations on a simple pattern. I knit this one up in less than an hour...so if you hurry you can make a few just in time for Easter. It would also be cute to knit the whole body in a chocolate brown...kind of like a guilt free chocolate bunny! The cool thing about this is that you don't need any specific yarn...any worsted yarn will work. It is a perfect way to use up all those little scraps of yarn in your stash. Peter Rabbit Finger Puppet K- Knit P- Purl K2tog - Knit 2 together as one stitch For this project I just used scrap yarn in blue for the shirt (like peter rabbits jacket in the Potter stories) and brown for the head and ears. I used the same blue as the shirt to make the eyes and a scrap of pink yarn to stitch the nose. I made this puppet using size 3 double pointed needles… but if you don’t have that size any similar size would probably produce similar results. You can also kn...
