1,000 Octopuses (Octopi, Octopodes)

My newest project is to make 1,000 octopuses. I have always been fascinated with folding paper cranes for luck (senbazuru)... Legend has it that if you fold 1,000 cranes it will grant a wish or give you a lifetime of good fortune... Sadly origami has never been my forte.... but amigurumi* TOTALLY is.... I love to make finger puppets and toys and I often have small bits of yarn and a crochet hook on hand to whip up little things on the go. These little octopuses have been something I have been making for years... they are easy and quick to make (I can whip one up in about 10-15 minutes) and they are like little 8 legged mandalas. I am not sure where my 1,000 octopus journey will take me... but I know that the first 100 are going to become a part of a yarn sculpture that I am working on...Here is a sneak peak. So far I am about 45 octopuses in to my 1,000... I am not sure that I will have them done by the end of 2025... but I plan on doing them as a series of smaller projects... the firs...

Ninja Bunny

This pattern isn't a new one... just a variation on my bunny finger puppet pattern .   Materials E or F hook worsted weight yarn tapestry needle Stitches: Ch - Chain Sl st - slip stitch SC - Single Crochet Inc - Single crochet 2 stitches into one Bunny Body:  Row 1: Start by making 6 sc into a magic ring (6) Row 2: (sc, inc) around (9) Row 3: (sc, sc, inc) around (12)  Row 4: to make the white eye slit in the ninja suit simply switch to white in any for any four stitches in rows 4 and 5. Add two black lines to make the eyes and you are done. I made the stitches in the back loops only to keep the stitches cleaner looking. Row 6-11: sc in each stitch (12) Sl st into next two and fasten off  Ears: Make ears by chaining 8 then sc into second stitch and continue to the end of the row. Fasten off and attach to the body. Weave in all ends.

More Hats for Octopuses (Octopodes, Octopi?)

I have patterns for hats... and I have patterns for octopuses... but now I am putting them both together so that you can make this cool hat and find all the information you need in one place.  The pattern includes 3 different hat sizes as well as three sizes of octopus to perch on top.

The Vulcan Mind Meld/ New Hat Pattern

Spocktopus Hat This is that pattern for a basic adult beanie. I like a hat that is long enough to fold up at the bottom so that it can keep your ears warm and fit a wide variety of head sizes. Since you are making it from the top down you can check it periodically and see if it is the right length for you. If you don't want to fold it up you can stop around row 14 or 15 and simply skip to row 19 to finish it off. I have also include a youth hat and a baby hat.  These hats are pretty flexible on the size and stretchy as well so you should have a lot of flexibility on sizing.  But if you find you need to add a little width simply add another increase row... or if you find the hats are too big then alter it on that end instead. Use an H hook and worsted weight yarn for this hat. Round 1: Form a magic ring and ch 1 hdc 10 times into the ring. Round 2: hdc inc into each stitch (20) Round 3: (dc, dc inc) around (30) Round 4: (dc, dc, dc inc) around (40) Round 5: (dc, d...

Little Reggae Creature

My newest pattern available in my Ravelry store.

New Pattern: Little Hoppy Creature (mini)

Here is a new pattern just in time for Easter.  It is very simple and requires only a small amount of yarn, so even if the Easter Bunny is running behind this year it should be easily completed in time for the holiday.  This is a perfect project for beginners.  Yarn weight is not really important.  Just match the yarn weight with the hook size and you should be set.  You want fairly tight stitches when doing  any amigurumi project so keep that in mind when choosing your materials.  I used a local acrylic yarn that they make here in Egypt.  The weight of the yarn is not specified but it is probably closest to sports weight yarn.  I made these using a size E hook. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think.  I also love seeing other people's projects so please post photos of your little creatures on Ravelry .  If you like this patterns please check out the side bar for other little creature patterns.  I hope you enjoy...

This Blog has moved.... to Egypt.

Sorry I haven't written in a long time... I've kind of been busy... what with Christmas and moving to Cairo, Egypt. I'm here safe and sound and while I question my judgement sometimes. I'm here for the next year and a half. I've been using up my quickly disappearing stash to make a few things for around the house to make it feel more like home. I made a hanging dish towel, some coasters and a couple of crocheted baskets. Just when my yarn was almost at it's end I found a local shop.  It is called Dentelle and it is located on the ground floor of the Maadi Grand Mall for anyone who might be in the neighborhood. I managed to pick up some local acrylic, a bit of novelty yarn, a skein of wool, and a little bit of cotton. The only problem with the cotton is that it is so fine that I don't think I'll be able to use it for much. I guess until I find another source for cotton yarn my little creatures will have to be made of wool or acrylic.  Here...
