Newborn Soaker

A friend of mine is having a baby in June and is planning on using cloth diapers. A few months ago she asked me if I'd ever heard of woolies or soakers... and if I knew how to make them. I didn't know at the time... but after a little research and some good information from one of my knitting lists I learned what I needed to know. Soakers are wool diaper covers that go on the outside of the diaper to help draw moisture away while staying dry on the outside. Wool has some pretty amazing properties and I'm really interested to hear how well they work. I just finished my first attempt... I plan on trying out several different styles and making them in a few different sizes so that she can figure out which ones work the best. I thought this one came out a little crudely... but cute all the same. I had forgotten how small a new born butt was...

    Did you treat the soaker to a lanolin bath? I made one similar it is a vintage pattern from 1946. Everything old is new again.

    I got addicted to knitting and therefore spinning when I began making soakers and longies (and of course skirties too) for my youngest... of course my then 18 month old decided to potty train and I'm left with a house full of fiber, spinning wheels, and bins full of fabulous wool. LMK if you need some lanolin to treat your knits, I purchased it by the pound LOL! BTW they work amazing!

I created this pattern while sitting next to the campfire during spring break. I made several of them... they didn't take anytime at all. I found that a 100% cotton yarn like Lily's sugar and cream or the Walmart Peaches and Cream yarn worked best. On some attempts I used a slightly higher quality cotton yarn and found that the finished product was not as stiff and therefor didn't fly as well...they still worked great, however, so by all means use what you have. I haven't tried making this pattern with any other type of yarn although I'm sure it would work great. These frisbees are great indoors or out. Size K crochet hook 2 balls of worsted weight yarn (100% cotton dish cloth quality works best) tapestry needle Round 1: Holding 2 strands together and using the K hook use the magic ring method to SC 6 into the ring. New Pattern: Octopus Finger Puppet

Materials F hook worsted weight yarn (I used cotton) tapestry needle Stitches: Ch - Chain Sl st - slip stitch SC - Single Crochet Inc - Single crochet 2 stitches into one SC 2tog - Single crochet two stitches together Round 1: SC 6 stitches into a magic ring. Pull tight (6) Round 2: *SC, Inc* repeat 3 times to complete round (9) Round 3: *SC, SC, Inc* repeat 3 times to complete round (12) Round 4 and 5: SC in each stitch around (12) Round 6: *SC, SC 2 tog* repeat 4 times to complete round (8) Round 7: *SC into next stitch, ch 8, SC into second stitch from the hook and the remaining 6 stitches* repeat this 8 times to make the legs. These little people are easy to make and you can make a wide variety of characters to entertain the kids for hours. Little People Finger Puppets Abbreviations: sc- single crochet inc- increase or single crochet twice into one stitch sc2tog- single crochet two together sl st- slip stitch ch- chain Material: Scrap yarn in 3 different colors and a hook that works best for you with that weight to make tight stitches. I used an Egyptian yarn that doesn't specify color but I would guess it was sport weight. I used an E hook with the lighter weight yarn. When using worsted weight I used an F hook.
